Ritual Meaning

Samhain is the ancestor threshold: endings, memory, protection, hospitality for the living, and respect for the dead without making the house spooky for sport.

Prayer

May the beloved dead be remembered with tenderness. May the living be fed, protected, and not frightened by their own clutter. May every ending make room for care.

Objects To Set Out

• Photo, name, recipe, or object of remembrance.
• Candle or flameless candle.
• Black beans, squash, chile, pan de muerto, apples, or chocolate.
• Broom for threshold sweeping.
• Bowl for candy, offerings, or donations.

Food

Cleaning

• Sweep threshold before dark.
• Check porch lights and walkways.
• Clear tripping hazards for visitors.
• Put candles where sleeves and pets cannot reach them.

• Leave some seed heads for birds.
• Collect fallen branches.
• Mark what is finished in the garden.

1. Choose one person, story, recipe, or lineage to remember.
2. Set the object or name in a clean place.

Midday

1. Cook something dark, warm, or ancestral.
2. Clear the porch and check lights.

Evening

1. Light a safe candle or flameless light.
2. Say the prayer and share food with the living.

1. Thank the remembered ones.
2. Extinguish flame, lock doors, and leave the house calm.
