Why this hike matters
Climb onto the Edwards Plateau.
Government Canyon protects more than 13,000 acres over the Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone. The route moves from an easy backcountry approach into a rocky climb, ending at a limestone edge above the canyonlands.

The official route begins gently, then climbs Sendero Balcones toward Bluff Spurs and the plateau rim.
Pause at the edge
The North Bluff Spurs Overlook sits at 29.5571, -98.7608. Stay back from exposed edges and keep to the designated trail.

A moderate hike with a rugged finish.
Start
Begin at the Backcountry Trailhead and follow a short section of the Joe Johnston Route.
Climb
Take Recharge Trail to Sendero Balcones, then continue uphill to Bluff Spurs Trail.
Overlook
Follow Bluff Spurs to the North Overlook, then return on Bluff Spurs to Recharge Trail.
Conditions
Expect uneven, rocky terrain, exposure, and greater difficulty during South Texas heat.
