Why this place matters

One week of rain opened deep time.

More than 34 inches of rain fell in the upper Guadalupe watershed during one week in 2002. Water overtopped the Canyon Lake spillway and cut a gorge that reveals ancient seafloor limestone and the plumbing of a Hill Country aquifer.

Flood process

The gorge makes erosion visible at landscape scale: water removed soil and rock, reorganizing the channel in days.

Cretaceous archive

Limestone layers, sea urchin fossils, ocean ripples, and dinosaur tracks preserve evidence from roughly 110 million years ago.
